Stabbity Stabbity

One of the long-standing items on my wish list has been that pointy blue sword that "everyone" but me had, the Joyeuse.

However, I had a couple things standing in my way. First, it's from an NM with a long pop window, so even if you have ToD, you can still be killing place holders for 8 hours or more without Charybdis spawning. My schedule, both in real life and in-game, have made it nearly impossible for me to have any sort of hope of camping it. Secondly, I really have a difficult time asking anyone for help with something I want for me, and this is something I couldn't do without help.

A few people have helped me with some random attempts over the years (like Erock, Yobun, and Narsat), but it just seemed I would just have to live my life in FFXI without a Joyeuse, unless I happened to get lucky at some point. It's truly not a necessity, but would be really nice for things like merit parties and Nyzul Isle, where I'm not really tanking things. After getting my Justice Sword, and having troubles keeping myself supplied with the Virtue Stone it required, I have been feeling like it would be very nice to have one after all, but still gave it up as a lost cause.

However, I got lucky this week, thanks to my friends. :-)

Goldfish has been leveling PLD recently, and several days ago remarked to me that he was going to see if he could manage to solo Charybdis as THF/NIN for his Joyeuse. I whined to him about being the only PLD in the world without one and wished him luck on his solo attempt. Goldfish was surprised I didn't already have one, and offered to try to get one for me if his soloing worked - even if I couldn't be there, I could leave Kiki in SSG, in party with Goldfish. I hated the thought of leeching a sword like that, but was a viable option, assuming he could indeed solo it.

On Thursday, Goldfish headed down to Sea Serpent Grotto, and found the place empty. He killed the place holders, and Charybdis spawned on the next round. Apparently his solo attempt wasn't as much fun as he had hoped, and Allia headed to SSG to help him win his shiny blue sword. Allia also thought I already had a sword, so with ToD in hand, they offered to get one for me that evening, after the Thursday linkshell event for Eminence. I was hoping that we could get an early spawn, so I wouldn't have to leave, but when I arrived in Charybdis' room, there was another group camping her as well.

They had 2x THF/NIN, RDM/WHM, and MNK/NIN. One of the THFs was after the sword, and offered us 500k if we'd fight with them and he could have it. He'd been camping "non stop" for days, and had been after the sword for years, but "non stop" wasn't really non stop, since he hadn't been there for Goldfish's earlier kill. I told him that I didn't need gil and I didn't have a Joyeuse. I wanted one as well. Lugh came to help as well, and the four of us were watching for spawns. On the third round after we arrived, we fought the first devil manta that spawned. The other group did a bit of a fake-out and pulled one of the outside devil mantas up to the door to fight it, so we assumed that the second spawn was outside the door, so we figured it was 16 minutes until the next spawns and put down our guard as it were. Suddenly, Charybdis spawned, and the other group got claim, since they had faked us out with the other devil manta, and were watching still. However, they wiped fast. They had no hope of handling the kraken. It was basically whap-whap-whap-dead, move to the next, and repeat.

I felt bad for them not being able to handle the fight, but we took claim when the four were dead, and had no troubles whatsoever with the fight. Goldfish was tanking, while I started out just curing him, waiting for him to have plenty of hate before I joined in fighting as well. With double Mambo from Lugh, and the enfeebles/debuffing from both Allia and Lugh, the fight was painless and over quickly. And I finally had a pointy blue sword to call my own! And best of all, I didn't leech it, and I even got to bed at a (sort of) reasonable hour. I was happy too that the other group got the claim and proved they couldn't handle it.

Thank you so much you guys! It really means a lot to me.

Goldfish, Allia and Lugh returned the next morning to get one for Lugh as well. Apparently they were there for close to 8 hours before Charybdis spawned. There had been quite a few campers with them, but they had all given up about an hour before the spawn.

I haven't gotten too much chance to play with my new toy, but did try out dual wielding justice/joyeuse. With double marches, it was fun to watch the swords double attacking. TP builds up really quickly, and it should be a lot of fun on the "kill everything" floors in Nyzul.

Quests: Summoner Preparations Complete!

I had been on a Carby Mitt run awhile back with a group Plumpixie and Chanell had put together, but I was only there for the first fight. I knew that I would probably not be able to stay the whole run, since I would have to get to Dynamis-Beaucedine, so I said I would go last. I didn't want to be a "got her mitts and ditched the rest" type of person. Sure enough, after our first kill, I was summoned to the Glacier, as another LS was gathering, and we needed to get people there early to make sure the zone wouldn't be stolen from us by another group (we're using the Rusty Bucket calendar, and wish all the other linkshells would as well). I knew I'd have another chance some day, and there certainly wasn't any rush for me to get mitts that can only be worn by a level 20 Summoner.

Now that Goto's actively leveling his SMN, he really could use a pair of Carbuncle Mitts, so I tried to get some people together to help. Thanks to Luiss dragging his friends into it as well, we had a decent little group with me (PLD), Goto (WHM), Luiss (BLM), Yumex (WHM), Madbender (BLM), Itera (MNK) and Fabian (MNK). Gilgameshrulz, another BLM, wanted to join us, but got girlfriend aggro just before we got the spawn area for the Crimson-toothed Pawberry, so he had to leave. On our way there, we stopped to pick up another offering, which was for Gil, but since he left, that offering was used for Madbender instead. Yumex also had an offering, so we fought the NM 4 times.

The fights went really well, with Rampart on my party preventing any damage from the first Searing Light, but I don't think we would have been damaged much even without it. We didn't get any Light Spirit Pacts to drop for our helpers, but we got the four pairs of mitts that people wanted.

I had Balu-Falu out as a Fierce Attacker for the last fight, since Itera had to leave. Balu-Falu leveled up to 57 when we were clearing the regular Tonberries out of the room, so that was nice too. He was nearly done in by the first Searing Light, but hung in there and fought with us until the next AOE got him.

Then on Sunday, Anrita put together a team for Diabolos Prime, which Frobro and I needed. He recruited Itera, Allia, and Habanero, and needed another MNK, so I asked Thoron if he'd like to go as well. He needed it too, so was very eager to join in. The seven of us made our way to the Shrouded Maw, and the three MNKs all slept for 100% TP. We headed into the arena for the fight, with Anrita waiting outside to raise us, just in case things went wrong.

The MNKs boosted a few times, Habanero used Soul Voice and gave us double attack songs, Itera Chi Blasted Diabolos and we were all drawn in. Allia let loose with Chainspell Stun, and three MNKs tore into Diabolos with Hundred Fists and their weapon skills. I cast Cure IV on Itera, then on Thoron, and then a Cure III on Thoron, and it was over. The poor avatar never stood a chance. I feel like it was cheating, but after my 6 failures and 10,000 exp lost to Diabolos Prime last year, maybe it's not so bad. I was just making the best use of available resources. Yeah, that's it. At any rate, it was pretty impressive to see them demolish him so easily.

I headed to Windurst Waters and claimed my pact with Diabolos, and ran out to play with him for a few minutes before heading to Jeuno for Sunday's Limbus. I'm still not sure if/when I'll ever level Summoner, but if I do, I'll have a full set of avatars on hand to do so. I'm still missing three of the elemental spirits, I think: Thunder, Light, and Dark. I think the prices have come down a lot, so even if I resort to buying them, it won't be too bad.

Leveling: Soloing as WHM/BST (15-17)

On Sunday, I decided to see how soloing as WHM/BST would work out. I got all my gear ready, grabbed three Vampire Juices Qiara had made out of red terrapin she had lying around, bought a brass hammer at the AH, and headed out from Windurt. I made my way to the Maze, stopping in Buburimu Penninsula on the way to check the mob levels (mostly Tough). The bats in the Maze were also Tough, so I fought the Akbabas near the zone, using one as a pet to kill the others. This went fairly well until night time. A Tough ghost proved to be much too tough, and I high-tailed it to the Crag and popped into Al'Taieu to escape its fury.

After that, I headed west a bit, and mostly fought Dhalmels. I'd been a bit displeased with how things were going with charmed mobs, so I called Balu-Falu to help me. I'd set him as Stalwart Shield before I left town, and that worked out really well. He pretty much held hate, and did more damage then pets did. I kept his health up, and bonked the mobs with my hammer. Things went quite well, and I managed several Chain #2s, which isn't bad for a solo WHM. :-)

Just after I hit 16, I spotted Serpopard Ishtar, the NM Dhalmel. The last time I saw him was before I created Kiki - back when Grymalkyn was a subjobless newbie herself. There was an Even Match Dhalmel near him, so I ran up, charmed the EM, and sent it in to fight Serpopard. I started fighting as well, but ended up getting scared, and ran off, leaving Balu-Falu and the dhalmel to whittle him down. As soon as I got out of range and put my weapon away, Balu-Falu came running after me as well. He still had hate, and as Serpopard got closer, I saw that they'd taken a good chunk off his HP, so I popped a vampire juice and started fighting again.

It was a really close fight, and when my pet came uncharmed, I was afraid it was all over, but I recharmed it, and we killed Serpopard! Both Balu-Falu and my pet Dhalmel had about 10 HP left, but at least we were all still standing. We got a bit lucky - Serpopard's last TP move was Berserk. If he'd used healing breeze, I think I would have lost the fight. I got 140 points for the kill, even with the penalties for having an NPC and a pet. I'd like to say I soloed a level 20 NM as a level 16 WHM, but really it was a trio...

My experience points dropped off a bit at 16, so I headed back to Buburimu, and was happy to see some of the bunnies and mandies were now even matches. Balu-Falu and I would fight those, or I would charm them and use them to help fight Toughs. I really did like soloing with Balu-Falu, and didn't end up charming all that much for the two levels, but when I do this again, I will keep subbing BST. It gives me that extra bit of safety in emergencies, as well as allows me to take on tougher mobs than I could without a pet. One thing I ended up doing a lot was charming a pet, sending it off to fight a tough mob, and waiting for the mob to kill the pet and come after me. Balu-Falu and I would then finish it off, and I'd get more points than I would if I had both Balu-Falu and a pet.

One interesting I noticed - Balu-Falu changed his outfit when I zoned with him, just as he normally would when I'd call him again after having him out.

After hitting 17, I walked back to town to send all my WHM gear back off to the mules and get back to my PLD75 for Limbus later that evening.

Notorious Monsters: NM Tuesday

Something is very odd in Vana'diel. We ran into three unclaimed NMs in one evening. It started out after our 645th Besieged (Undead Swarm). Yobun needed some help opening the Garlaige Citadel Banishing Gates so he could find a Treasure Coffer for his BST AF. Itera and I joined him, and he dual-boxed Ijin as well. As we were heading down to the basement behind Banishing Gate #1, I spotted a cockatrice up ahead. I've never seen a cockatrice in GC, so it was a bit of a surprise. Turned out to be Skewer Sam, an NM that drops a not-too-popular Wind Spear. We got a new title for it though, Beakbender, so that was fun.

Then just around the corner, Old Two-Wings was flapping about. We killed him as well, but didn't get the coveted Bat Cape.

We left Yobun behind Banishing Gate #3, with several RMTish BLMs, and Itera headed back to Whitegate, while I went to try farming Coeurl Meat in the Sanctuary of Zi'Tah (note to self, sub Thief next time). Yobun got a coffer pretty quickly, and headed out the back entrance to Sauromugue Champaign. He nearly ran straight into Roc. Thoron and Itera quickly headed from Whitegate to Sauromugue, Thoron enlisted the help of his BLM friend Shutupanddie, and I used OP warps to get back there myself. Yobun logged Ijin back in, and we all gathered to the north of Roc's plateau. Yobun charmed a raptor, sent it to fight Roc, got drawn in, but managed to make it to the cliff edge without dying.

It took us awhile to kill him, especially since he used Benediction to heal himself for nearly 14,000 HP at one point, but Ijin and I kept Thoron alive, and we defeated the giant bird. We got a vile elixir, reraiser, and crimson blade for our troubles, but again, the new title, Roc Star, was the real reward.

Notorious Monsters: Swift Belts!

After our swift belt run in February that left Lucrezia and I empty-handed, Lucrezia wanted to go back and try again with a smaller group, hoping to finally get one for himself and Kiki as well. Lucrezia spent hours and hours farming four of the Fomor Codices, while Kiki got lucky and only had to kill two Tauri to get hers. Since they're rare and can't be mailed, it takes a bit of coordination to get multiples. Lucrezia handed them off to Ranzz, Elbryan, and Grymalkyn. Grymalkyn's been living in the Tavnazian Safehold pretty much since my husband quit playing in January, since it's easy for me to leave her home point in Windurst for fishing guild and mog storage access, and she has her Tavnazian Ring to get back to the Safehold quickly and use the Jeuno Auction House to sell off her inventory.

Since we didn't want to fight the Tarutaru Fomor NM, and you can only pop the NM of your own race, all of Kiki's accumulated hate was worthless. I took Grymalkyn out with Lucrezia and Ranzz and Elbyran into Lufaise Meadows for several evenings of Fomor hunting to build Grymalkyn's hate, and would use Grymalkyn to pop the Mithra NM.

After weeks of not being able to come up with a time when we could actually do the run, we finally went last night. We had a different set of people than we thought we would, and more helpers than we had hoped for, which turned out to be a good thing. Our original plan had been to do something like BST BST BST RDM, but based on our experience last night with BST/NIN (Lucrezia), BST/WHM (Grymalkyn), NIN/WAR (Daden), BLU/WHM (Diasuke), SAM/WAR (Midget), PUP/MNK (Anastasia), we wouldn't have been able to do it. This group had troubles getting the Mithra classroom cleared without respawns popping up, mostly because the nasty damage Grim Halo would do (and the deaths it induced), and the need to rest up before proceeding. So Midget switch to Lalandra as SMN/WHM, and Yobun joined us as THF/NIN.

Grymalkyn ran in to pop Caithleann as Lalandra and Yobun were making their way to the classroom, since the path was clear and wouldn't stay that way for long. Unfortunately Lalandra ended up getting aggro in the maze and dying before getting to us, and our fight went really poorly. She's a RDM-NIN with chainspell, and a bit of a pain to fight. It looked like we were going to have a full wipe, but Lucrezia and Yobun hung on to the bitter end and won. Better yet, a Swift Belt dropped! Yay for Lucrezia! I think this was his 6th attempt to getting one.

Fortunately I had reraise up on Grym, and was able to start getting people back on their feet. While we were waiting for weakness to wear, I logged Grym out and logged Kiki in, charmed a Gazer from the first section of Sacrarium, and joined the group at the Mithra classroom. After we cleared the room, Lucrezia had enough hate to spawn Caithleann with his Fomor Codex. This time our fight went much much better, with no deaths. Having real pets probably helped a lot too, as both Lucrezia and I had been using funguar jugs on the first spawn. And again, a swift belt dropped! Yay for Kiki! That made it 1/2 for me. Not as lucky as some, but pretty darn lucky nevertheless. Now to figure out what else I'd need for a PLD/NIN haste build....

Since we still had 3 pop items on hand, and several of the helpers would also like a swift belt, we headed over to the Hume classroom, so Daden and Diasuke could pop Balor. Balor's RNG-MNK, and the only thing you really have to worry about with him is Eagle Eye Shot. As long as hate was either on a pet or a fully-shadowed Daden, it wasn't going to be an issue, and wasn't. Balor's a lot easier to kill than the Mithra. We did two rounds of clearing the area and spawning the NM, and were going to go for a third and final spawn, but we had several deaths when one of the Fomor Samurai used Grim Halo twice in a row. People were sleepy, so we called it a night. We'll probably head back soon to try for another bunch for other people.

Notorious Monsters: Bomb Queen

Last Saturday, a bunch of TheUltimates assembled in Ifrit's Cauldron, hoping to get five Bomb Queen Rings. This ring, which has +75HP on it, is a 100% drop from the Bomb Queen, which is spawned by trading three Bomb Queen Ashes and one Bomb Queen Core to a ??? spot in Ifrit's Cauldron. Armageddon, Tsakiki, Jarbit and Kojita all had pop items, and Lumikumi managed to get them as well before we finished the run (Jarbit had extra Bomb Queen Cores).

We had quite a few helpers, some of whom were hoping we might get Avengers to drop. Meshe, Goto, Frostwitch, Pokeil, Itera, Darsonavin, Lucrezia, Luiss, and Theodoric all helped us out. Lucrezia was there as her BST75, and used the local fauna as pets. The fights went very well. The Bomb Queen keeps generating "babies": Bomb Prince, Bomb Princess, and Bomb Bastard (we didn't see any of the Bomb Bastards). We had the BLMs ready to nuke the Bomb Princes, while the Bomb Princesses were taken care of by the melee. I was the nominal tank for the fights, but Itera usually ended up doing most of the tanking.

The Bomb Queen has about 50,000 HP, so the fights took a bit of time, but Lucrezia kept an eye out for Volcanic Gas spawns to send a pet after, and we all whitled away on the Bomb Queen. We only had a couple of deaths from Self Destruct I believe - Goto and Darsonavin were the victims if I remember correctly. It was a fun series of fights, and we now have 5 happy owners of Bomb Queen Rings. We didn't get any of the Avengers, which has led us to speculate that they're somehow tied to the Bomb Bastard.

It's nice to have finally added the ring to my collection of things to give me more HP!

Notorious Monsters: No Swift Belt for J00!

Elbryan organized a Swift Belt run for his gods LS, and invited Lucrezia and I to join in on the fun, since we both "need" a Swift Belt. He planned to have us start out in the level 40-capped Phomiuna Aqueducts to farm the Fomor Codices that would be needed to spawn the NMs, then switch over to the level 50-capped Sacrarium for building Fomor hate and spawning the NMs. He didn't think farming would take too long, but it ended up taking about 3 hours to get the six that were needed.

I got dressed up as BST/RDM and headed to the Aqueducts. Elbryan (RDM/WHM) and Littlejohn (THF/NIN) were already there, and we started in killing the lower level Tauri that are in the first room. The team filled up with Kaela WHM/BLM, Yobun DRG/WAR, Lucrezia BST/NIN, Ranzz BRD/WHM, Easykill NIN/WAR, Amyalfrodo PLD/WAR, and finally Davos BLU/THF. As we got more people, Lucrezia started pulling the higher level Stegotaurs from the next room further up. After everyone was there, we split into two groups, with Luc and I duoing the easy ones, while the "real" party moved up to the next area and took on the higher level ones.

There were plenty of Mortal Ray deaths all around, but in the BSTs' case, it was always our pets rather than us. After we got all the Fomor Codices we needed, we headed back to the Safehold and switched to other jobs for the level 50 capped Sacrarium. Littlejohn and Kaela both switched to NIN, Easykill switched to MNK, Yobun to WHM, and Lucrezia to THF. Jugernaut (RDM) and Rassitier (MNK) also joined us to help out.

Swift Belts drop off of spawned NM Fomor in the classrooms in Sacrarium. There is one of each race, and only a member of that race can spawn that particular NM, and they must have a very high level of Fomor Hate in order to do so. The different NMs have different jobs, which make some more difficult to fight than others, so our plan was to fight the Hume (RNG/MNK) and the Mithra (RDM/NIN), but we decided to try the Galka too (BRD/PLD). The Tarutaru and Elvaan are considered much too dangerous. Since we had to have an order for who would get a swift belt from which run, we decided to /random before each run, and the winner would be the one to use "their" codex, and get the swift belt if it dropped.

The first thing we had to do was get people enough Fomor Hate, so we started in killing all the Fomor around the Mithra's room. It took a longer time that we'd expected before we could actually spawn the first NM, but we got a bunch of subligars (I think every DRK Fomor but one dropped a subligar), and a couple chest keys as well, not to mention all the exp. The fights generally went pretty well, but the DRKs seem to like to use Grim Halo twice in a row, usually killing a bunch of us in the process. Amyalfrodo was given priority for the first spawn, since she had to go to work. Kaela spawned the Mithra NM, Caithleann, by trading a Fomor Codex to the Stale Draft spot in the room. We killed the NM, and sure enough, there was a Swift Belt for Amy.

We headed through the maze to the Hume room (since the Mithra room needed 15 minutes for the Stale Draft to return), cleared the area, and either Elbryan or Ranzz spawed Balor, the Hume NM. This one was for Easykill, and again, a Swift Belt dropped. We were pretty excited at that point, since we were 2/2, but ended up hours and hours later with only 4 Swift Belts out of 10 spawns. Yobun and Elbryan got the other two.

Since hate is reset when you trade the Codex to the Stale Draft, we decided to include the Galka, Indich, as well, since Yobun and Littlejohn could both spawn that. So we spent the day moving between the Mithra, Hume, and Galka rooms, clearing the Fomor, building hate, and spawning the NMs and getting or not getting swift belts in the process. We finished up at 8PM, 10 hours after I arrived in the Aqueducts for farming. At this point, we had dwindled down to just 8 of us, the helpers and the first two to get their swift belts having left us. What a long long day it was! There were plenty of deaths throughout the day, but I ended up with several thousand exp on my BST that I hadn't had when we started out in the morning.

Lucrezia and Elbryan have concocted a plan to try again as a foursome with Ranzz and me, since Lucrezia and I still want our swift belts. It should be a lot of fun trying at least. I think we're going to try it as RDM, RDM, THF, and BRD, but we'll see. I headed into the Aquaducts last night as BST/RDM to farm a Fomor Codex for myself, and I got one on the second Taurus, which was really nice. It was also good I did, since another BST showed up just then with the same idea in mind. The three Tauri aren't enough for two BSTs wanting the same thing.

Notorious Monsters: Bo'Who Warmonger

Thanks to Ranzz, I got the TimeOfDeath for Bo'Who Warmonger, an NM Quadav in Pashhow Marshlands. He drops the Tortoise Shield, which happens to be one of the few shields that mages can equip, and has +1 INT and +1 MND, making it a nice addition to my mage gear for level 30 and higher. It's also rare/exclusive, so the only way to get it is to kill the monster and get the drop.

I headed out to Pashhow to be there in time for his 21 hour spawn window, as PLD75/BST37 for wide-scan. No one else seemed to be in the area looking for him, and sure enough, when he popped up on wide-scan, I had him all to myself. The fight took a bit longer than I expected (he's a PLD with high defense and kept trying to cure himself), but even with 3 lesser Quadavs trying to help out their colleague, I was never in any trouble. And the shield dropped! Hurray!

We were thinking that perhaps it was a 100% drop, as Ranzz had also gone 1/1 on Bo'Who, but we returned the next morning to try for a shield for Grymalkyn, and we didn't get a shield. :-(

Notorious Monsters: Leaping Lizzy

I was running from the outpost in North Gustaberg to Bastok on Saturday for Dynamis, and happened to stumble upon the Notorious Leaping Lizzy, just hanging out, minding her own business, with no one else anywhere to be seen. This was my first chance to kill her as Kiki (I'd stumbled upon her once when I was playing Grymalkyn years ago), but I didn't get anything from her. I think it's odd that there didn't seem to be anyone camping her at all, but find that I wish more of the game were like that - you just stumble upon a notorious monster as you're wandering around.

Lakshmi has been oddly quiet during the "off hours" for the Japanese though, usually running under 2000 people (as opposed to 3000-4000 during Japanese prime time). Some people are speculating it's because so many people have been playing FFXII since it came out a couple weeks ago, which could well be the case.

Fishing: The Horror! The Horror!

Grym and Kiki have continued in their quest for fishing skillups, but haven't made a lot of progress. On Sunday, we felt like we did as BSTs searching for a new camp after leveling. We tried Crescent Fish in East Sarutabaruta, Elshimo Newts in Yuhtunga Jungle, Noble Ladies on the Bibiki Bay Manaclipper, and finally took a couple of trips on the Mhaura-Selbina Ferry. We ended up with .5 skillups for Kiki and .2 for Grym.

The next evening we headed back to the ferry again, loaded with sliced bluetail. We caught a fair number of Marlin, and Kiki got a few Silver Sharks using her Lu Shangs, but Grym couldn't reel them in with her Composite Rod. We both got another .2 skillups for the evening. We ended up taking our fish to Zaldon in Selbina, and we both got Pirate Charts. Hopefullly we can try the "BC" for those with Elboron some time soon. It would be so cool to get a Mercurial Kris out of it! Grym also got a Brigand's Chart, which is for a solo endeavor in Buburimu.

We saw the Sea Horror twice in our travels. The first time there was a party of 4 that were probably hoping for Pirates, and they grabbed the Sea Horror and killed it. On another trip, the Sea Horror was there as we went up on deck. Grym and I didn't have any troubles killing it, though a couple of its attacks did quite a bit of damage. It mostly missed me, or hit me for between 0 and 20, even before I got Phalanx up (PLD/RDM). It was fun getting our revenge on the monster!

Grym spent some time on Tuesday fishing Tavnazian Gobies in Lufaise Meadows, and got a few skillups there, but felt they didn't bite any better than Crescent Fish.
